About Turkey

Turkey, a large country with one foot in Europe and most of its bulk in Asia, is well-known for its warm weather and its legendary city of Istanbul. However, there is much more to this nation than beach vacations and urban exploration.

The people are largely of the Islamic faith, though religious minorities such as Christians are free to worship as they wish in this secular state. Tourists usually find Turks friendly and open and willing to attempt to communicate, regardless of the language barrier. Turkish is the country’s official language, but nearly everyone you meet will speak at least a few words of English (and probably several other languages).

The unit of currency in Turkey is the New Turkish Lire, and credit cards are usually accepted at major hotels and resorts. No inoculations are needed for most people visiting Turkey. Women should bring scarves for their heads if they plan to enter mosques.
